Feelings are faster than reading. Before we read a text, we already know whether something is cheap, expensive, gentle, childlike, modern, or traditional. Most often, however, we reduce letters to their communicative function, typing yet another line into a messaging app or writing a Word document, wondering why we need so many “fonts” when they all look pretty much the same.
During the workshop, we will dive into the world of letters and the diversity of their forms. We will test or challenge the proposition that these graphic signs convey more information than merely the representation of a sound that we know and are able to pronounce. We will explore the impact of text and the emotional effects that can be achieved through different shapes, colours, sizes, and so forth. Can an “A” serve as a warning, while a “Z” be as adorable as warranting a hug?
Finally, each of us will create a self-portrait using the two letters that define us, i.e. our initials. What would our sign look like? Will we be able to tell something about ourselves through these two seemingly inconspicuous signs? What is your TYPE?
During the workshop, we will use simple graphic techniques, e.g. stencilling.
* Weather permitting, during the workshop we might take a walk in the vicinity of the gallery.
