In the frame of Workshops of Revolution the Feminist Health Care Research Group will particularly look at feminist practices of gynecological self-examination and the effect these self-empowering courses have had on the concept and understanding of women’s* health, bodies and sexuality. Dobbie Law and Carol Downer had visited feminists in West-Berlin in 1973, inspiring them to work towards founding a feminist health center. After setting up self-help groups and leading courses in self-examination, the first Feminist Women’s* Health Center (FFGZ) in Europe was founded in 1977 in West-Berlin.
Joan, one of the founding members of FFGZ, will speak with us about these second wave feminist struggles for women’s* health and reproductive freedom. On Saturday we offer the possibility to conduct a self-examination together.
On Sunday we will go into dialogue with Ciocia Basia, feminist activists who organize legal abortions in Berlin. Together we would like to engage in an intergenerational exchange about strategies and practices of feminist empowerment.
