We warmly invite young people and adults to extraordinary stop-motion animation workshops that will take us into the fascinating world of early illusion. This time, our main source of inspiration will be the phenakistoscope, an innovative nineteenth-century optical toy. Before the age of cinema, it was precisely such simple devices that made it possible to set static drawings into motion.

A phenakistoscope consists of a rotating disc with cut-out slits, on which a sequence of changing images is drawn. When we spin the disc and look into a mirror through these small openings, our brain combines individual graphics into a smooth, continuous movement. This remarkable experience makes us aware of the fundamental principles governing cinematography.

During our meeting, we will combine this historical concept with classical stop-motion animation.

The technique involves taking a series of photographs of various objects, which are minimally transformed or moved in space between each shot. Once the photographs have been edited together, we gain the illusion of animated, moving matter. Each participant will create their own unique “loop” based on a circle divided into several equal segments. Together, we will attempt to tell an engaging story in 12 or 24 frames and present a smooth metamorphosis that continuously comes full circle. We will mould three-dimensional forms from plasticine and boldly experiment by combining various artistic media, and then bring our creations to life under the camera lens. All kinds of wild, unconventional and abstract ideas will be warmly welcomed. We are looking forward to welcoming you! Come with loads of positive energy and open minds!
