Ranging from existential garage overtones to photogenic and ironic trash culture, Catcher in the Borscht maps out new Russian counter culture in the plastic and glass era of oligarchic capitalism. The conversation with the author will focus e.g. on contemporary music trends in Russia and on what has become to the legacy of punk culture and the new wave of the perestroika, inspirational today for the young generation of artists. We will moreover pay attention to the numerous references to the tradition of the early 20th-century avant-garde, Soviet SF, “cosmic” analogue electronics, Siberian shamanism, and the shady “blatna” culture. The conversation will be accompanied by a screening of music videos.
