Our three-hour calligraphy workshop will introduce participants to the calligrapher's basic tools, which are a broad-bladed nib and a penholder, and the writing medium, which is ink or ink. They will learn some basic pen strokes held at the right angle. Against all appearances, this is not so easy! Participants will then move on to practising the uncial script and building words, preserving the characteristics of this beautiful circular script, originating in the Middle Ages (3rd - 9th c. AD).
After this introduction to the art of calligraphy, each participant will write a short Christmas greeting.
Participants will work at their own pace, with the support and guidance of the instructor. This will make it easier for the beginner to get started in calligraphy and to avoid mistakes. Participants will be provided with script samples and will learn how to develop an interest in calligraphy on their own using available materials, tools and publications.
