A collection of stories about seas and oceans
a lecture by Karolina Breguła
5.12.2024, 6 pm

Seas and oceans account for more than 70% of our planet. Millions of human and non-human persons live along their shores and have an intimate, often complex relationship with the water. Visual artist Karolina Breguła has amassed an archive of stories for more than a year in collaboration with coastal residents and researchers. During her lecture, the artist will share selected stories and talk about the methodology of creating the collection. Among others, we will watch the short film Fish, made in collaboration with Sweden's last professional female fisherman, who runs a small fishing business off the Bothnian Sea. We will see houses swallowed up by the South China Sea and read the diaries of Irish female swimmers.

Karolina Breguła, b. 1979, a visual artist, author of films, photographs, installations, and social activities. She creates stories about art, architecture, and urban spaces, which are the areas of her anthropological and sociological research. In her works she tells stories. For years she has been practising collective fiction writing, which she considers her political activity that supports the process of diagnosing, articulating, and discussing social problems. She is currently working on a research project dealing with the relationship between humans and the sea. Her work has been shown in such institutions as the Jewish Museum in New York, the MOCA Taipei Museum of Contemporary Art, the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum, and at such international events as the Venice Art Biennale and the Singapore Biennale. She is the recipient of many scholarships and awards, including e.g. the Spojrzenia Award, the EMAF Festival Award, the Golden Claw Award at the Gdynia Film Festival. She works at the Academy of Art in Szczecin. Since autumn 2023, together with Weronika Fibich, she has run Lokatorne, a place for anti-disciplinary activities. Collaborates with lokal_30 gallery.
