We look at them when we want to find our way. That is what they are for: they can tell us where something is located and allow us to read directions and distances. But what happens when we look at them without a navigational purpose? Can we read more from maps? What can we take from satellite images?
During the workshop, we will look at the map visually rather than semantically. Technology will help us: we will immerse ourselves in satellite imagery and search for images within it. We will explore remote areas of rainforests, the vast rivers of Siberia, sandy coastlines, as well as our native forests and lakes. We will see what an accomplished abstract artist nature can be and discuss what we, as humans, add to these images. Works of art will appear before us of their own accord. We will find hundreds of them, and our task will be to find our favourite. Using the collage technique, we will create abstract postcards that will tell the stories of places in a completely different and surprising way. We will depict wild and transformed areas, reflect on the state of our environment and discuss our feelings about it. We will look at the world, literally and figuratively, from a new perspective.
The workshop is intended for children aged 5–10 accompanied by carers. Adults accompany the children throughout the workshop and work together with them.
