For centuries, spurred by curiosity, people have explored the world, learning to read the signs in the earth and sky. Maps have accompanied us during our travels, adventures and everyday discoveries, becoming the key to understanding the reality around us. They also hold information about both our past and future.
Young explorers are invited to a workshop where we will learn to read maps, discover the history of the development of Poznań and create unique puzzles. We will also talk about how maps can be used in contemporary artistic practice and whether there is a place for them in an art gallery.
The workshop will start with a short talk about maps and their role in everyday life. Next, there will be a presentation of different types of maps, including ancient and contemporary maps of Poznań. Group work and guided conversations will provide the students with information on the differences between the maps examined, their function and the changes taking place in urban development.
Activities will include exercises in scale and distance measurement and the use of various spatial orientation tools, followed by a search of the students' current places of residence on the old maps.
Working in groups, the young people will create an imaginary map of their own imaginary space, marking on it what teenagers deem important in the city.
