Connective Tissues. Applying traditional weaving techniques
an upcycling workshop for school groups (primary school grades 6-8)
10-11.06.2025

Working in groups, we will create modern artistic textiles.

We will weave using “just about anything”, applying useless and worn-out things to make our work. Old, discarded clothes, strings, nets, buttons, and textile scraps will become components of our artistic ideas. Taking on the role of artists, we will examine the textures, colours, shapes of used materials and objects and search for their potential. We will set our imagination in motion, asking ourselves: “How can I give this a new form?”

We will weave our prepared textile scraps into a warp, creating successive threads which, like the connective tissues in our bodies that connect the different parts of the body, will form a unified whole.

The concept of things in circulation leads us to the idea of upcycling in art. Upcycling art combines artistic creation with the idea of sustainability. Upcycling transforms old and useless objects into something completely new and valuable. Waste and discarded items are transformed into works of art that delight the beholder by their form, function and message.

It is an intuitive process, often based on improvisation, combining different textures, contrasting materials and unusual forms. The creative process in upcycling often begins with deconstruction. Taking objects apart helps us find elements that can be used in new and creative ways.

Our workshop will serve as a pretext for introducing concepts related to art, e.g. artistic textiles. What does it mean when we say “don't lose the thread” and why is this important in weaving? We will discuss more extensively the concept of upcycling in art and its relevance to the idea of sustainability. The term deconstruction, on the other hand, will be used to reflect on the dismantling, “taking apart” of objects, forms, and shapes to create a completely new and unique quality.
