Wojciech Bąkowski’s film Jezusku documents an audio-performance carried out by the artist on 3 April 2007 in the Arsenal Municipal Gallery in Poznań. It was carried out in darkness, with only the blinking dots of tape recorders and an electric strip visible to the audience – these dots formed a pulsating constellation synchronised with the sound. The minimalist audio installation consisted of four cassette tape recorders.

In his auto-commentary on the work, Bąkowski explains that the direct inspiration for this “literary theatre of one actor” came from living in a block of flats on the Wichrowe Wzgórze estate in Poznań and snippets of sentences overheard from neighbours, on the street, in a shop, as well as Miron Białoszewski’s prose.

Wojciech Bąkowski, born in 1979 in Poznań, creates drawings, performances, experimental animated films, and alternative music; he is also a poet. Graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznań (currently known as the UAP). In 2005, he received a diploma in audio-performance in Prof. Leszek Knaflewski’s studio and animation in Prof. Hieronim Neuman’s studio. In 2004, he founded the music formation KOT, he was also the leader of the music groups Czykita and Niwea, and a member of the PINKPUNK association. In 2009, he won the Deutsche Bank Foundation’s Spojrzenia Prize for the most interesting artist of the young Polish art scene. His works were included in a number of exhibitions, including the 2009 group exhibition entitled The Generational: Younger Than Jesus at New York’s New Museum. Also in 2009, he was awarded the Young Art Medal, and in 2011 he received the visual arts. Characteristically, Bąkowski works at the intersection of different disciplines. He describes himself as a total artist.

The artist is a member of Penerstwo, a semi-formal group of artists, former students of the local Academy of Fine Arts in Poznań, who graduated circa 2005. The group includes: Wojciech Bąkowski (who is regarded as its unofficial leader), Piotr Bosacki, Tomasz Mróz, Konrad Smoleński, Magdalena Starska, Radek Szlaga, and Iza Tarasewicz.
